How to answer the question ‘tell me about yourself‘.

A. Do’s:

  • Prepare: If you are here that means you are already doing this point. It’s always better to learn things we don’t know the answer to. So always do some research, learn and understand the whys and hows for anything you are going to be doing. Now we have given a separate topic on how to get prepared for a job interview, if you want you can go check it out here.
  • Be confident: Whatever field it is, first impression might not be the last impression, but that first impression is what is gonna keep you in the game. So don’t be afraid to reply and answer the question.
  • Be short but relevant: Interviewers don’t want you to take a lot of time to just answer a single question. So keep it short yet give the interviewer what you think they need to.
  • Talk about your experience: In your short answer, the interviewer expects to hear your past experience, let it be so that you have one or not. Because this is one of the major factors that helps them decide whether you’re suitable for the profile or not.
  • Talk about your plan: In short tell the interviewer what you plan for your future, and how is working in this company relevant to it. Make yourself look enthusiastic and determined.
  • End your point with the company: Keep in mind that by the end of your answer, the interviewer must feel that you are a profitable interest to the company. Whatever point you end your answer with, just make sure that the point is relevant to the company or the profile you are going to be working for.
  • Be professional: Although you have to keep the interviewer interested, but at the same hand the interviewer should not feel disrespected. So the best way to do so is by keeping your answers professional.

B. Don’ts:

  • Exaggerate: Although it might seem like a good idea, especially if you are a fresher, but never do the mistake of exaggerating your answer, even if it’s 100% legit. Try to be at a normal pace, not too passive nor too aggressive.
  • Talk about your current role: This is one of the main reason many interviews turn into a boring conversation. Even though you might have a godly profile, but try talking little about your current role and what you are doing, because this often gives your interviewer a lot of topics to question you.
  • Talk negative: Yes everybody have their ups and downs in their life, but don’t stress up too much on those particular sides while answering the question, it males the environment uncomfortable for the interviewer no matter how you put it.
  • Be boring: Let us all agree on one thing guys that being boring is never helpful for anyone. I mean we would not like to be with a boring person, would we? And if you want to know how not to be boring and how to be more interesting, in any crowd and not only interviews then click this link.
  • Memorise: Although you might feel nervous to answer the question in real time, trust me with the fact that being natural at the moment and being nervous is far much better than answering the questioning as if you’ve been repeating this line since Christmas. Now you might wanna say that there is a point called prepare, but understand the fact that preparing for something would be like going through this post and understanding the key features and memorising would be to memorise the whole post. Now I believe we all are smart enough to understand after this example.
  • Hesitate: And no matter how nervous you are and how awkward the question could be, just be yourself, and yes be yourself and speak everything and don’t hesitate to answer a question, let it be your own way. Because getting rejected is far better than the regret of thinking maybe if I had spoken up. So be yourself gentlemen.
